From the Rector – Rev. Lisa Hunt

People of God,

The budget situations on the local, state and federal levels are having profound effects on our community at St. Stephen’s. Many of our folks have to plan lay- offs of their employees or are facing being laid off, depending on their work. With the threatened elimination of Community Block grants there will be more homeless people in Houston. The State of Texas is threatening to cut off major funding to education, from pre-kindergarten through higher education. The mentally ill and the elderly poor will be especially impacted. On the local level our boards of education and county governments are slashing positions and adding to overcrowding to our jails and schools.

Our baptismal covenant calls us to work for justice and to respect the dignity of every human being. Part of being faithful to our baptism is to be an engaged citizen. Budgets are documents which reflect the values of a people. Let your elected representatives hear yours. Find out who they are here.
